The Ethics of Volunteerism/Professionalism
by Barbara Fitzgerald, M.D., Ethics Chair

To paraphrase a famous politician, "Ask not what your KPA/APA can do for you but what can you do for your KPA/APA. So many times I hear people complaining about paying their dues to KPA/APA with those words of "what have they done for me lately". The ethical issue that surfaces here is the tenet to improve our communities and to fight for the effort of the KPA and APA stands for all of us when it fights prescribing privileges for psychologists, when it lobbies for parity, when it provides a mechanism to process complaints of ethical violations, when it sets ethical standards. Alone none of us could take the time to do these things. So we pay our dues and gripe, I would challenge you to not only pay your dues gladly but to volunteer. Where is our profession going to be if we do not step up both with our pocketbooks and our time??
