University of Kentucky Welcomes New Residents

The University of Kentucky Department of Psychiatry was pleased to welcome
our new residents for the 2001/2002 academic year. We are especially
excited that this group of incoming residents and feel they will greatly
enrich our program.

Incoming Triple Board Residents
Dr. Felissa Goldstein from the Medical College of Ohio and Dr. Lori Nation from the University of Louisville are our new Triple Board Residents. Dr. Goldstein comes to us from MCOT with an impressive record of volunteer and academic
activities. She clearly demonstrated having the energy required for the
hectic pace of Triple Board training. Dr. Nation impressed us as a very
solid and engaging Triple Board candidate and we felt she would definitely
be an asset to our program. The Triple Board residents and our faculty
were very pleased with these incoming residents and we look forward to
working with them over the next five years.

General Psychiatry
We felt that we were able to recruit equally excellent candidates for the
General Psychiatry program this year also. Three highly sought after
candidates from UK matched here. Dr. Robert Sears had an impressive
background in volunteer work including international work, and will be an
intelligent and thoughtful addition to our group. His wife, Gosha, is
currently a medical student at UK. Dr. Latonia Sweet entered UK College of
Medicine after working as a mental health assistant at Eastern State
Hospital. She was the recipient of a Rock Schulyster Award during medical
school and was the outstanding medical student in psychiatry from the
graduating class. Dr. Sweet is originally from Hazard and plans to return
there to practice. She and her husband, George, have purchased a small
farm in Winchester. Dr. Edwina Zettler is originally from Louisville and
is married to Jim Zettler who currently enrolled at the UK College of
Dentistry. Her energy and charismatic personality have already greatly
enhanced our program. She has enthusiastically taken on the
position of Resident Representative to the KPA. In addition, she is coordinating
activities for our Department's involvement with Mental Health Advocates of
Central Kentucky National Depression Day activities including our screening
at the W. T. Young Library.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program accepted one resident from our
program, Dr. Jeff Weyeneth. He is originally from Illinois and did his
internship with the US Navy. Dr. Weyeneth worked for several years in the
field of psychiatry with the Navy before coming to UK for his psychiatry
residency. He is particularly interested in adolescent substance abuse
issues. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children and live in
Georgetown, Kentucky. We also recruited Dr. Travis Hansen, who was
previously in training at Vanderbilt University as a first year Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry resident. Dr. Hansen is originally from South
Dakota and is married to Jorcee, who is from the same town in South Dakota.

Our final addition to the program is Dr. LaDonya Reed. Dr. Reed graduated
from medical school at the University of Kentucky and was one of our
favorite and most competent medical students when she rotated to
Psychiatry. During her internship year in Pediatrics at the University of
South Carolina she decided that she was not satisfied with the
repetitiveness of Pediatrics or the brief contacts she was able to have
with her patients and decided to transfer to Psychiatry. South Carolina
was sorry to lose her but we were very enthusiastic to have her join our
program. Dr. Reed is originally from Mt. Sterling and we are sure that her
family and friends were all very glad to have her return to Kentucky.

As we begin another season of resident recruiting, we hope that we will be
able to find equally exception residents to join our resident group, and
we look forward to working with this group over the course of their training.
