Electronic Bulletin Board
As part of their continued member service, APA created
an electronic bulletin board where members can ask questions
about HIPAA, view questions asked by their colleagues,
and read the answers prepared by consultants with HIPAA
expertise. To access the electronic bulletin board,
click on the "Members Corner" link in the
top right corner of the APA web page (www.psych.org).Then,
log in with your username and password. (You will need
your member number to register. If you do not have your
member number handy, you can contact the APA Answer
Center at 1-888-35-PSYCH for your member number).
Once
you are logged in, you will see two links in the top
right corner under "HIPAA Question and Answer".
Click on: "Ask a HIPAA Question", to submit
questions. Click on: "View the HIPAA Bulletin Board",
to view archived questions and responses.
In
the Members Only Corner, you can also access the APA's
HIPAA Educational Packet with sample forms and HIPAA
Training Materials for your staff.
Dr. Spurgeon Chosen Area V MIT-Rep
Joyce Spurgeon, M.D., a University of Louisville PGY
III, has been chosen by Area V as their Member-in-Training
Deputy Representative to the APA Assembly. As Deputy
Representative she will attend Area V meetings as well
as Assembly meetings. She has been appointed to the
Assembly Reference Committee, Advocating for the Profession.
Dr.
Spurgeon, Chief Resident at U of L, has been an active
member of the KPMA Council as the resident representative.
This year Pfizer awarded her the PGY-2 Inpatient Psychiatry
Award. In 2001 she won the S. Spafford Ackerly Award
for Outstanding Performance in Psychiatry.
"I
am very excited about being chosen the Area 5 representative.
I am lookingforward to learning more about how the APA
works for all of us. I thinkthat this is a good time
to be active in the APA especially given therecent push
by psychologists to get prescribing privileges to be
active in the political arena because that where change
is going to happen.," said Dr. Spurgeon.
Dr.
Zettler Named to APA CORF
Dr. Edwina Zettler, UK resident, was named to The APA
Committee of Residents and Fellows (CORF) which is one
of the two standing committees of residents within the
APA. CORF serves as a training ground for residents
to become more active within the APA.
The term of a member is for three years without reappointment.
Residents are selected as members so that all seven
geographic areas of the association are represented
on the committee. Dr. Zettler represents Area 5, the
South, which is composed of 17 District Branches. As
a committee member she will attend the spring APA Annual
Meetings and the fall Components Meetings held in Washington,
D.C.
CORF
not only provides a mechanism for Members-In-Training
to make recommendations that will ensure their full
participation in APA activities, but also helps to stimulate
district branches to include residents in district branch
committees, task forces, and other activities. The group
maintains liaisons with other organizations involved
in residency training and makes recommendations concerning
the education and training of residents. One of the
chief goals of CORF is the recruitment of residents
to become members of APA.
Presently the Committee of Residents and Fellows is
laboring to revive the psychiatric resident newsletter
"PRN" and to distribute a questionnaire on
resident professional development to all psychiatric
residency programs in the U.S. The survey will serve
as a tool both to determine resident satisfaction and
important elements in the development of a psychiatric
resident's professional identity, and to ascertain topics
or issues (both good and bad) that residents across
the country wish to address.
Dr.
Zettler said, "As your Area 5 CORF representative,
please feel free to contact me with any questions or
issues at the following E-mail address: Edwinazet@insightbb.com.
I look forward to representing our area and especially
the State of Kentucky"
