The University of Kentucky Department of Psychiatry held its Nineteenth Annual Resident Graduation and Awards Banquet on June 11, 2003, at Spindletop Hall. Residents, faculty and special guests enjoyed an outstanding evening with fine food, warm welcomes and fond farewells as we ended another academic year. We welcomed several of our new interns who were able to attend the banquet, including Dr. Candace Gibson and her husband, in-coming surgery intern, Toby, from the University of Mississippi, Dr. Will French, Dr. Vincent Blanch and his wife Erin, and Dr. Jeff Tuttle, all from the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Katz, Director of Residency Training, also introduced Mr. Ernest Bean of NAMI, Mt. Sterling. Mr. Bean was recognized for the generous scholarship money recently given to the Department from NAMI, Mt. Sterling, which will be used for resident travel to national meetings.

Dr. Lon Hays, Chairman, began the awards section of the program with his presentation of the Chairman's Award to Dr. Catherine Martin, Vice-Chair for Research, for her contributions in the areas of research and research education.

This was followed by recognition of the resident graduates. There were two residents completing General Psychiatry training, Dr. Ronee Aaron and Dr. James Kimball. Dr. Aaron will be moving to Davenport, Iowa, to join a private practice group that serves inpatient and outpatient clientele. Dr. Kimball will be returning to his hometown, Salt Lake City, where he will be working in a private, inpatient setting.

Completing the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry program were Dr. Alicia Carlos and Dr. Jeffrey Weyeneth. Dr. Carlos completed her training several months ago and has been working part-time for Bluegrass Comprehensive Care and spending time at home with her two young boys. Dr. Weyeneth will be moving to Davenport, Iowa, to join the same private practice group as Dr. Aaron, but in the child division.

Dr. Josh Cabrera and Dr. Julie Hagedorn were our two Triple Board graduates. Dr. Cabrera will be joining another Triple Board graduate, Dr. Brian Stafford, at Tulane, and Dr. Hagedorn will be going to work for Bluegrass Comprehensive Care.

In the area of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, the residents awarded Dr. Robert Aug as Outstanding Supervisor, and Mareen Dennis, MA, as Outstanding Teacher. Dr. Robert Simon was recognized as the Outstanding Community Supervisor, and Dr. Thomas Hunter of the University of Miami received Special Recognition for his telemedicine course on child psychopharmacology that he taught from his office in Miami to our classroom in Lexington.

Dr. Debra Katz continued as master of ceremony for the next portion of the program in which residents were honored. The Third-Year Medical Student Teaching Award to the Outstanding Resident Teacher was given to Dr. Tim Houchin, first year resident. The Psychiatry Residents' Research Award went to Dr. Julie Hagedorn. Dr. Todd Durell, incoming Chief Resident, received the Suzanne I. Park Memorial Psychotherapy Award.

Two new awards were given this year that are named in honor of two current faculty members. The first is the Arnold Ludwig Award to the Outstanding Resident Teacher/Scholar which went to Dr. James Kimball and Dr. Michael Cerullo. The next award, the H. Otto Kaak Outstanding Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Resident Award was given to Dr. Jeffry Jacobs, incoming Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Chief Resident. The evening was completed by Dr. Edwina Zettler and Dr. Tonia Sweet who provided a humorous program called "Entertainment Tonight" that featured photographs and commentary on many of our faculty and residents. We looked back on the past year as one of challenge and accomplishment. We will miss those who have completed training and are moving on to the next level of their professional careers, but we look forward enthusiastically to the new academic year ahead.
