When Not to Keep a Secret Essay Contest
The Kentucky Psychiatric Medical Association announces the 2007 "When Not to Keep a Secret Essay Contest". This contest is open to ninth and tenth graders. The prizes for Kentucky winners are First Place, $300, Second Place $200 and Third Place $100. The teacher of the winning essayist is awarded $200.

This contest is part of the national contest sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association Alliance. The winners will each receive a savings bond: the national winner receives $500, second place receives $300, and third place receives $100.

Each school is allowed to enter three essays. These are due in the KPMA office, 649 Charity Court #13, Frankfort, KY 40601 by February 1, 2007.
The top three Kentucky entries are then sent to the national contest. In the past 7 years, Kentucky has had three national winners and three finalists.

New Patients Assistance Program: Partnership for Prescription Assistance Kentucky
KPMA along with over 20 statewide health related organizations has launched a new patients assistance program. One call should put patients in contact with the appropriate program and medicine for their needs. The patients need to know the names of the medicines they take. A trained specialist will answer questions and help with the application process. People who need assistance can visit the partnership’s website at www.pparxky.org or call its toll-free number at 1-888-477-2669.

Medicaid Psychiatric Medical Advisory Committee Formed
In response to the many complaints about the prior authorization process in Medicaid, the Medicaid Psychiatric Medical Advisory Committee was formed. This committee has been meeting with representatives from the Department for Medicaid Services, First Health and Undersecretary Mark Birdwhistle since last spring. The new dedicated fax number for Kentucky psychiatrist and psychiatric nurses is 1-800-453-2273. The people who handle these prior authorizations are specially trained. When they get a request that is outside of the FDA guidelines, they will check with a First Health psychiatrist before rejecting the request.

Please keep KPMA informed of any problems with Medicaid so the Advisory Committee can bring them to the attention of the Department and work with them on a solution. Documentation of any problem is quite important. Call us toll free at 1-877-597-7924, fax to 502-695-4441 or email to kpma@insightbb.com.
